Thoughts on Baby Monitoring Devices

I came across an interesting article in the Parenting section of the New York Times that I wanted to share entitled “More Anxiety Than Relief”: Baby Monitors That Track Vital Signs Are Raising Questions. Baby Monitoring devices have been around for years. Let’s take a look further into the article.

The article describes how one of the most popular baby monitoring products in the marketplace, namely the Owlet Smart Sock recently developed a software glitch and stopped communicating altogether with the phone app. The manufacturer has since fixed the problem but the underlying issue regarding not only the Owlet, but the entire baby monitoring industry at large is, do these products actually save babies lives or are they just giving parents a false sense of security? Once you’ve read the article, it becomes abundantly clear this industry is preying on the fears that manifests in parents as a result of the possibility of their baby dying of SIDS. Currently there are approximately 35.4 SIDS related deaths per 100,000 babies. Among the most vulnerable are those babies who are inexperienced tummy sleepers who begin rolling over in the first few months of life. However, if your baby rolls over and stops breathing, for example due to an airway obstruction, there isn’t a baby monitoring device in the world that is going to resuscitate them. Instead we should be focusing our efforts on providing babies with the safest sleeping environment possible. One that will ensure that in the event they roll from their backs to their tummy’s they will be able to breathe normally right through the sleep surface. This is the sleeping environment that the Breathe Easy Baby breathable crib mattress provides. It has been designed specifically to address this condition. Granted it’s not a hi-tech solution that has an awesome app that parents can monitor from their smart phone. Instead it’s a simple, durable, reliable and affordable solution that incorporates a level of ingenuity that defines products made in America.

Currently, nearly all major US news outlets around the country are consumed with the vaping crisis. Every single vaping related death is covered on the nations evening news. There’s no question that this is a very tragic situation, but the fact is 10 or more babies die every day in the US from SIDS. It’s a silent killer and causes untold and ever lasting grief to those families that have lived through this nightmare. Yet where is the outrage? Where is the public outcry for answers? Currently the only recommendation pediatricians provide anxious parents who are concerned about SIDS is to monitor their babies sleeping condition throughout the night. A hollow and unrealistic recommendation if there ever was one. We seem to be in search of a high-tech solution such as those mentioned in the article when the answer may be right in front of us.

The Breathe Easy Baby Breathable Crib Mattress has been scientifically proven to be 10 times more breathable than the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation of a firm mattress with a tight-fitting sheet.
